Oscar Predictions

The Academy Awards will soon be upon us so I'll stick my neck out and give my predictions.

Best Picture

Probably one of the most open in years. I'd say it's a toss up between No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood, with Atonement in the running but it could be any of them really. I'll say No Country.

Best Director

Yet again, no obvious front runner... I'll go for the Coens.

Best Actor

Now it gets easier... if Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't get it, it'll be the biggest upset for years.

Best Actress

Julie Christie is heavily fancied for one of those Forrest Gump / Rain Manish / Hollywood disability roles. Might be an outside chance for Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard has done one of those showy roles that often nabs an Oscar but I think Julie will get it.

Best Supporting Actor

I think Javier Bardem has a lock on this.

Best Supporting Actress

More open but I think Cate Blanchett with a chance of Saoirse Ronan.

Best Original Screenplay

I think it'll be Diablo Cody; though that's a bit of a punt.

Best Adapted Screenplay

I strongly fancy Ronald Harwood as, for bizarre reasons, The Diving Bell And The Butterfly is not in the best Foreign Film category and I think it'll be heavily supported in the other categories it is nominated as compensation.

Best Animated Feature

I'd love Persepolis to get it as it looks interesting and it's not just one of those Pixar-ish kid movies that always seems to win lately.

Best Cinematography

Well Roger Deakins has been nominated twice, but I think Janusz Kaminski, who did Butterfly, is in with chance as I've said before.

Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design

Sweeny Todd... historicals always do well here, especially Costume.

Best Documentary Feature

Sicko is the only one I've heard of but I don't think it'll win.

Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing

I seem to remember the Bourne films sweeping up the technical Oscars in the past so I'll go for The Bourne Ultimatum for these.

Best Original Score

Think Atonement could scrape a consolation here.

Best Visual Effects

The Golden Compass will get it for CGI bear hair.

Best Documentary Short, Best Original Song, Best Animated Short, Best Live Action Short, Best Foreign Language Film

Well it would just be a guess at this point, so I won't bother.

Best Makeup

Norbit... at which point the earth will crack open and Satan and all his minions will fly out to lay waste to the world. Or at least eat Eddie Murphy, hopefully.

Raquel Welch Dances

Some weird science fiction thing from the seventies.

The Mindscape Of Alan Moore

Long interview with the wizard of Northampton talking about his career in comics and magic. The 77 minutes will fly by.

Rain By The Cult

Stone cold classic

High Voltage Cable Inspection

Sounds a bit boring from the title, but this clip is both amazing and beautiful. Though I don't think I'll be taking it up as a career any time soon.
